Abstract
The article describes in detail the activities and conditions of a little known yet important group in the history of Polish sociology: the African studies, founded and led by J. Chałasiński in 1962–1974. The author discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the forced choice situation in which this institution was established, and calls for the continuation of African studies in Polish science.
