This report summarizes the author’s visit to Warsaw in February 1982, focusing on interviews with sociologists occupying key academic and political positions during the early period of martial law in Poland. It addresses discrepancies between foreign media reports and eyewitness accounts, the internment of intellectuals, and the class-based differences in their detention conditions. The author discusses political divisions within both the ruling party and the Solidarity movement, highlighting tensions between pragmatists and fundamentalists. The role of the Soviet Union is examined through contrasting sociological perspectives, alongside concerns about potential future political violence. The report emphasizes the significant involvement of sociologists in analyzing and influencing the sociopolitical crisis, both domestically and within international scholarly communities.
